"Marvelous Metamorphosis" is the story of pioneering 17th Century naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian’s expedition into the Surinamese jungle.
A gifted painter, Merian (Lustgarten) was the first to document the life cycle of the butterfly. Her detailed illustrations revolutionized the field. However, scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries dismissed the observations of a woman with no formal education. A century after her works were published, they languished, largely forgotten…Until now.
